Dump the keyboard only interface.

Update the game to allow use of the mouse to interact in the game. Make it more obvious where the character has a choice of actions. What might happen if the two characters could interact with each other?

Music plays always

Have music always playing, perhaps lower volume or silence when in choices' areas. Have background change a little at least in cave, as it does elsewhere. Add animals such as rabbits, foxes, deer, etc., in foreground occasionally to add to natural...
